A whole grain-based diet can help lower high blood pressure. This can minimize the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney failure, explains Peter Walger, a doctor specializing in internal medicine and intensive care medicine.

For a health-promoting effect, three servings of whole grains per day are necessary, such as unground wheat, wild rice, barley, or oatmeal, explains the physician.

Whole grains work as well as medication

This finding is not new; the scientific study from Great Britain that Walger refers to proved the positive effects of whole grains years ago. Two hundred healthy middle-aged people participated in the study. It showed that the blood pressure-lowering effect of a diet rich in whole grain products is comparable to that of medication.

According to Walger, the researchers attribute this to plant-based ingredients such as fiber, magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which are mainly found in unpeeled or unground whole grain products. Antioxidant components in the husk appear to have a beneficial effect on the condition of blood vessels.
